Weekly News! 30.1.26
What a fabulous week we have had! Take a look at what we have been up to!
Maths
This week we began by exploring the concept of inverse operations, specifically focusing on addition and subtraction. The students discovered how these operations are interconnected, much like a family, which helped them grasp the relationships between various numbers.
Throughout the week, we engaged in activities that allowed the children to apply their understanding of these concepts by finding related addition and subtraction facts for three given numbers. They demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and skill in this area. We concluded the week by tackling some challenging addition and subtraction word problems, which proved to be both fun and educational. It has certainly been a busy week!
Looking ahead, next week we will shift our focus to mass. We have some exciting activities planned, particularly in celebration of Number Day, which we believe the children will thoroughly enjoy.
Each week, we will share a key maths fact. This week, we are learning:
Addition Facts:
-
4 + 6 = 10
-
6 + 4 = 10
Related Subtraction Facts:
-
10 − 6 = 4
-
10 − 4 = 6
Read, Write Inc. (RWI)
This week, the children have shown remarkable enthusiasm as we revisited previously taught sounds and strengthened their phonics reading skills. It has been truly wonderful to witness their engagement in learning!
We have focused on several key areas, including identifying “special friends,” which are groups of letters that make a single sound. The children have been practising Fred Talk, blending, and segmenting words, all of which are essential skills for reading. Additionally, they have been reading green words and learning some red (tricky) words. To support your child’s learning at home, you can help by spotting “special friends” in everyday words, blending sounds together to read full words, and practising regularly for an extra boost. We have also been concentrating on handwriting, ensuring that the children are using capital letters correctly, forming letters carefully, and placing full stops to complete sentences.
Reading at Home
-
Children will bring home two books each week:
-
RWI Home Book – should be read three times a week for fluency. Changed every Monday by an adult.
-
Book with coloured sticker – children can change independently, ideally in the morning.
-
-
Please ensure reading folders are placed in the trays at school.
-
Encourage your child to read at home and record it in their reading record.
-
Certificates are awarded weekly to celebrate reading achievements, and every 20 reads earns a special certificate!
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher
Home Learning
This week, we would like to encourage you to continue working on fact families with your children. This activity is a wonderful way to reinforce their understanding of addition and subtraction in a fun and engaging manner.
For example, using the numbers 4, 6, and 10, your child can create four related addition and subtraction facts: 4 + 6 = 10, 6 + 4 = 10, 10 - 4 = 6, and 10 - 6 = 4. We would love for your child to come up with their own sets of numbers and create their own fact families. This exercise not only helps with their arithmetic skills but also enhances their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Thematic
This week in our thematic lessons, we have been focusing on design technology. We began the week by exploring the origins of food, discussing how it comes from either plants or animals. This foundational knowledge allowed us to identify and classify various foods based on their sources.
Throughout the week, we applied our understanding of the Eatwell Plate and the different food groups to plan a balanced meal. In preparation for creating this meal, we practised essential skills such as cutting, peeling, and grating, all while using the equipment safely. It has been a wonderful opportunity for them to engage in hands-on learning and develop their culinary skills.
As we continue our lessons, I encourage you to discuss the importance of balanced meals at home and perhaps even try preparing a meal together. This will reinforce what the children have learned and make the experience even more enjoyable.
