Weekly News! 12.6.26

Wow what a week we have had! Let’s take a look at what we have been up to…
Maths
This week in maths, we have continued our work on multiplication and have built on the learning we completed last week. The children have shown great enthusiasm and have been keen to apply their knowledge in a variety of ways.
We began by revisiting what we already know about multiplication, which helped to strengthen our understanding and confidence. The children then represented arrays in two different ways, allowing them to see how multiplication can be shown visually and practically. They also created their own multiplication stories, which helped them to connect mathematical ideas to real life situations. Towards the end of the week, we started using the bar model to support us with solving word problems.
This has been a really positive step in developing the children’s problem solving skills, as the bar model helps them to organise information clearly and identify the calculation needed. It has been lovely to see them growing in confidence and beginning to explain their thinking more clearly. To continue supporting your children at home, please help them practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
Next week we will be looking at division.
Read, Write Inc.
This week in RWI has been a busy and productive one. We have completed the phonics screening check, and the children have worked incredibly hard throughout. We are very proud of each and every child for the effort, focus and enthusiasm they have shown.
We have also continued to practise spotting special friends, Fred talking and reading words. Alongside this, the children have been working on their writing, using punctuation carefully and reading those tricky red words with increasing confidence.
When we receive the pass mark for this year, we will let you know in due course. In the meantime, please be assured that the children have made us very proud with their progress and determination.
Thank you for your continued support at home. We greatly appreciate all you do to help your child with their reading and writing practice.
Reading
Children will bring home two reading books each week: a RWI home book and a Learning Zone book (with a coloured sticker). RWI books will be changed by an adult every Monday, so please ensure all reading wallets are placed in the trays. Children should read their RWI book three times during the week to build fluency. Learning Zone books can be changed independently by the children on Tuesday–Friday mornings.
Minute Reads are also included; once completed, please ask the class teacher for a new one. Please read with your child regularly at home and sign their reading record each time. Both RWI books and Learning Zone books can be recorded in the reading record. Certificates are awarded weekly, with additional certificates for every 20 reads.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Some children have completed the RWI coloured books, they will now have a ‘challenge book’ in their book bag, instead of a coloured RWI one. This will not be changed until they have finished it, as they are slightly longer!
Thematic
This week, we began our new thematic topic, Everchanging Environments. We started with the big question, “How does our environment change over the year?” The children shared some wonderful ideas, including changes in the weather, how trees and flowers change through the seasons, the birth of baby animals, and the different birds we may see at various times of the year.
As part of our learning, we explored the school grounds to observe and identify some of the wildflowers growing there. We also planted seeds so that we can watch their growth over the coming weeks. In addition, we learned about two scientists linked to this term’s work, David Douglas and Alan Titchmarsh, and discovered some interesting facts about them. We then focused on the question, “What part of a plant is underground?” Using real plants, the children explored the roots and learned about their important role in helping plants grow. They also enjoyed using magnifying glasses to observe things more closely.
Next week, we will continue our learning about the different parts of a plant and the jobs they do.
