Weekly News! 4.9.26
It has been wonderful to welcome the children back to school, and we have been so impressed by how confident, settled and ready for learning they have been. This week, we have focused on PSHE and on getting to know the children well as they begin the new term.
On Thursday, we explored what it means to be part of the Chilton community and introduced our three expectations: Be Ready, Be Respectful and Be Safe. We discussed what these look like in our classrooms, around the school and in our daily routines. On Friday, we moved on to our Chilton Values of Respect, Kindness, Equality and Courage. Through stories, discussions and activities, the children thought carefully about how these values help us to create a happy, safe and welcoming school community. We also talked about how positive choices help everyone to learn, feel safe and belong, and we introduced Chance to Change cards as a reminder to stop, think and make positive choices. In addition, we discussed Stop and Share behaviour and the ways adults support children when they need extra help.
Next week, our afternoon lessons will continue to focus on responsibility, understanding and managing feelings, relationships, social skills and belonging. We will also begin maths and Read, Write, Inc.
If you did not attend the meet and greet meeting with us last term, or you want a little recap of all things Year 1, you are very welcome to join us again on 8 September at 2.45 pm.
Reading
Next week the children will bring home two books in their reading folders on Monday or Tuesday. One will be a Read, Write, Inc. home reading book, which should be read three times during the week to support fluency. These books will be changed by an adult every Monday. The other book, with the coloured sticker, should be changed independently by your child, ideally first thing in the morning. These books can be changed as often as needed, and we will continue to support the children as they learn to do this themselves. Please make sure reading folders are placed in the trays so that we can read with the children and change books as needed. We would also encourage you to hear your child read as often as possible at home and to record this in their reading record. Each week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in assembly, and children will also receive a certificate or prize for every 20 reads, so it is very important that reading records are signed each time your child reads at home.
