Weekly News! 16/1/26

Welcome back to our Year 2 weekly blog! We have had a super busy and very exciting week in class! We have been learning new things, working hard, and having lots of fun together. We can’t wait to share all the brilliant things we have been doing, so keep reading to find out more!
English
In English, we have been continuing our work with our Max book and exploring the story in more detail. We have been learning how adjectives can be used to describe nouns and make our writing more interesting and exciting for the reader. We spent time thinking carefully about different adjectives to describe the characters, objects, and settings in the story, and practised using these words in full sentences.
We also focused on speaking and writing using the correct tense. We practised talking about events that are happening now using the present tense and events that have already happened using the past tense. This helped us to understand how verbs change and when to use each tense correctly.
Alongside this, we worked hard on punctuating our sentences accurately. We practised remembering to use capital letters at the beginning of sentences, full stops at the end, and finger spaces between words. We checked our work carefully to make sure our sentences made sense and were clear for others to read. We are becoming more confident writers and speakers each week!

Reading
Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time.
Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult.
The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning.
Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.

Please ensure reading folders are placed in the trays each morning so that we can read with your child and update their books when needed.
Chilton Heroes Reading Certificate – Each week, one child per class will be recognised for their fantastic reading in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning how to solve two-step addition problems and thinking carefully about how to break them into smaller, manageable steps. We practised reading the questions closely to understand what we needed to do first and what we needed to do next. We used a hundred square to help us count on accurately, add tens and ones, and recognise number patterns. This helped us to check our work and make sure our answers were correct.
We also used number lines to support our learning by jumping forwards in steps to show how the numbers changed as we added. This helped us to visualise the addition and explain our thinking clearly. We talked about different strategies we could use and compared methods to see which worked best. By using practical resources and clear methods, we are becoming more confident problem solvers and improving our addition skills each day.

Thematic
In Thematic, we have begun learning about our very own Ramsgate Harbour. We have been talking about what the harbour is like today and how it has changed over time. We looked at pictures from the past and compared them with what the harbour looks like now. This helped us to spot similarities and differences and understand that places can change over many years. We discussed why the harbour is important to Ramsgate and how people have used it in the past and still use it today. We have really enjoyed learning about our local area and discovering more about the history of Ramsgate Harbour. The children really enjoyed learning about a place they had been to.
Home Learning
This week we would like you to practice your knowledge of adjectives by describing some of the places, people or things around your house. We look forward to hearing all about them!
RSPB Big Garden BirdWatch
This term, the whole school is taking part in the Big Schools' BirdWatch to collect data for the RSPB. We are inviting you to take part at home too. Here's what you need to do:

2, Only record the birds that land in your garden
3. Record the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time
4. Sign up online and submit your results to the RSPB. Here's the link: Big Garden Birdwatch
Miss Isaac, who is Chilton's science leader, would love to see any photos of you doing this and also know any particularly interesting birds you saw. Feel free to send her an email: carol.isaac@chiltonprimary.co.uk
