One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 30/1/26

Welcome back to our Year 2 weekly blog! It’s been another action-packed and exciting week in our classroom. We’ve been busy learning new skills, working really hard, and enjoying lots of fun along the way. We’re so excited to share everything we’ve been up to, so read on to find out more!

English

In English this week, we have been learning all about verbs and adverbs. We explored how verbs tell us what is happening in a sentence and how adverbs help to describe how an action is done. We practised spotting verbs and adverbs in sentences and then used them in our own writing.

We also began writing exciting action sentences inspired by our new class book, Traction Man. The children used powerful verbs and carefully chosen adverbs to describe Traction Man’s brave adventures, helping their writing to sound livelier and more interesting. We were so impressed with how creatively everyone brought the action to life!

Reading

Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time. Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been focusing on division and learning how it can be shown through sharing and grouping. We began by sharing objects equally into groups to find out how many each group had, making sure that everyone received the same amount. We then explored grouping by sorting objects into equal sets and counting how many groups we could make.

The children used a range of practical resources, such as cubes and counters, to help them visualise division problems and check their answers. We also discussed the importance of equal groups and what happens when groups are not fair. This hands-on learning helped the children deepen their understanding and become more confident when solving division problems.

Thematic

In Thematic learning this week, we have been exploring the world around us by learning about the different continents, seas, and oceans. The children identified and named the seven continents and located them on a world map and globe. We also learnt about the major seas and oceans, discussing where they are in relation to the continents.

Through map work, discussions, and hands-on activities, the children developed their geographical skills and gained a better understanding of how our world is organised. It was wonderful to see their curiosity grow as they asked thoughtful questions and shared what they already knew about different parts of the world.

Home learning

This week in your home learning we would like you to create/make/draw your own world map and show where the equator is!

We would also like you to start practising your red words. We would like you to do five a week and the words for this week are: after, again, any, bath and beautiful.
