Weekly News! 22.5.26

Wow! What an incredibly exciting and memorable week we have had in Year 2! From puppet making and Viking Games to our wonderful “Be You, Be Here, Belong” parade, the children have had such a joyful and action-packed week full of smiles, laughter and fabulous learning opportunities.
We have been absolutely blown away by the children’s enthusiasm, creativity and fantastic attitudes throughout the week. It has been lovely to see their confidence continue to grow and to celebrate all the wonderful things that make each and every child unique and special.
Maths
In maths this week, we have been exploring the wonderful world of 3D shapes!
The children have been learning to identify and name a range of 3D shapes and have enjoyed comparing their different features. We focused particularly on faces, vertices and edges, and the children impressed us with how confidently they used this mathematical vocabulary during discussions and activities.
We investigated how shapes are similar and different and enjoyed sorting and describing them using their properties. The children especially loved handling the shapes and exploring them practically. It has been fantastic to see their confidence continue to grow and we are so proud of the amazing mathematical thinking they have shown this week.
English
This week, we reached the end of our learning journey with The Lonely Beast. The children have absolutely loved exploring this beautiful story and have produced some truly wonderful pieces of writing inspired by the text.
To support our writing, we focused on building detailed and exciting sentences by using who, when, what, where, why and how questions. This helped the children think carefully about the important information they needed to include in their writing and encouraged them to expand their ideas thoughtfully.

We then used these skills to retell the story, carefully using sentence openers and applying all of the fantastic learning we have developed throughout the term. We were completely amazed by the children’s beautiful writing, creativity and growing confidence as authors.
The children also worked incredibly hard to edit and improve their work, ensuring they were producing their very best Year 2 writing. We were so impressed with the pride they took in their work and the mature way they reflected on how to make their writing even better.
We are incredibly proud of all the progress the children have made in English this term!
Reading
Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time. Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.
Thematic
On Tuesday, our classrooms transformed into busy design studios as the children became fantastic puppet designers!
Using all of the knowledge they have developed throughout our materials and joining topic, the children researched, planned and created their very own puppets wearing a brand-new Chilton Primary School uniform. The excitement in the classrooms was simply wonderful!
The children carefully selected materials and joining techniques, thinking thoughtfully about whether each material would be suitable for its purpose. We were so impressed with the brilliant discussions they had about fabric choices, strength, flexibility and appearance.
Their finished puppets looked absolutely fabulous and the children showed such creativity, patience and determination throughout the process. The new uniform designs were especially impressive - perhaps Mr McAuley might even take some inspiration from Year 2’s amazing ideas!

Next term our thematic topic is ‘Our Wonderful World.’
PSHE
To bring together all of our wonderful PSHE learning this term, we celebrated with our fantastic “Be You, Be Here, Belong” parade.
It was such a joyful afternoon and we absolutely loved seeing the children express themselves so confidently and proudly. From colourful outfits to clothing linked to hobbies and interests, every child shone brightly and it was a lovely reminder of how special and unique our Chilton family is.
Home Learning
For the start of our exciting new thematic topic, Our Wonderful World, we would love the children to become habitat designers!
Your challenge is to design and create a habitat for an animal of your choice. Think carefully about what your animal would need to survive and feel comfortable in its environment. Will your habitat need water, shelter, trees, rocks, caves or lots of space to explore?
The habitat can be big or small and you can present it however you choose, perhaps as a drawing, model, painting or labelled diagram. Remember to think carefully about why your chosen habitat would be suitable for your animal.
Be creative and have fun!
