Wow! What a wonderfully busy week we have had in Year 2! Although the weather has certainly been keeping us on our toes, it has not stopped us from having a fantastic week packed full of learning, creativity and excitement.
Just a little reminder that the children are coming into school with appropriate clothing for the weather. We have had plenty of rain this week and lots of soggy shoes and coats! Looking ahead, the forecast is looking much brighter, so please remember sun hats, water bottles and sun cream to help us stay safe and comfortable whilst enjoying the sunshine.
This week has been particularly special as we have celebrated Science Week and performed our class assembly. The children have represented Year 2 brilliantly and we are so proud of the enthusiasm, confidence and positivity they have shown throughout the week.
English
This week, we have continued our learning based around the wonderful story Grace and Family. The children have loved exploring the text and using it to inspire their own writing.
We have been focusing on using our senses to create rich and detailed descriptions. The children thought carefully about what they might see, hear, smell, taste and feel, helping them to bring their writing to life. We were amazed by the fantastic vocabulary they generated and the way they used their imaginations to create vivid pictures for their readers.
As part of our learning, we also became researchers and gathered fascinating facts about The Gambia. The children enjoyed discovering information about the country's culture, climate and geography before using their findings to create exciting and informative fact files. We were so impressed by the effort they put into their work and how confidently they used their new knowledge in their writing.
It has been wonderful to see the children applying so many of the skills they have worked hard to develop throughout the year. We are incredibly proud of their growing confidence as writers.
Next week, we will begin our brand-new text, The Magic Finger, and we cannot wait to start another exciting writing adventure together!
Reading
Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time. Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programmeand will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.
Maths
This week, we have been fantastic fraction finders!
We began by exploring fractions of shapes and discussing how shapes can be divided into equal parts. The children showed a brilliant understanding of halves, quarters and thirds and enjoyed explaining their thinking using mathematical vocabulary.
As the week progressed, we moved on to finding fractions of amounts. The children tackled these challenges with determination and resilience, applying their knowledge carefully and working hard to solve increasingly tricky problems.
We also explored what happens when the numerator changes and discussed how this affects the value of a fraction. The children enjoyed comparing fractions and spotting patterns between them.
To finish the week, we challenged ourselves to order fractions on a number line. We were so impressed by the confidence and perseverance the children showed whilst applying everything they had learnt throughout the week.
Next week, we will be moving on to statistics.
Science Week
Science Week has been a fantastic opportunity to get hands-on, brains-on and wonderfully creative with our learning!
Throughout the week, the children have taken part in a range of exciting scientific activities and investigations. We have loved seeing their curiosity shine as they asked thoughtful questions, made predictions and explored different ideas.
The children approached every challenge with enthusiasm and excitement, showing fantastic teamwork and resilience along the way. It has been wonderful to watch them think like real scientists as they investigated, observed and discussed their findings. Their excitement has been absolutely infectious and we have loved seeing them dive so enthusiastically into their learning.
Class Assembly
A huge well done to all of the children for their fantastic class assembly this week! We were incredibly proud of the confidence, enthusiasm and maturity they showed when performing in front of their families.
Our assembly took everyone on a journey through our Year 2 adventure, exploring the exciting topics we have learnt about throughout the year. From Sew and Grow to Our Wonderful World, the children reflected on all of the wonderful experiences, skills and knowledge they have gained during their time in Year 2.
It was lovely to look back at everything we have achieved together and celebrate just how much the children have grown as learners. Their confidence, knowledge and enthusiasm shone throughout the performance and reminded us all just how much their brains have grown this year!
Home Learning
In maths next week we will be learning all about bar charts! We would like you to collect some of your own data and present it in a beautiful bar chart.
Be creative and have fun!
