Weekly News! 19/6/26

We have had another fantastic week of learning in Year 2! The children have continued to demonstrate enthusiasm, curiosity and resilience across all areas of the curriculum. Here is a snapshot of what we have been learning this week.
English
This week in English, we began exploring our new class text, The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl. The children were immediately captivated by the mysterious opening of the story and enjoyed discussing their first impressions of the characters and events.
As we delved deeper into the text, we focused on describing actions and events using ambitious vocabulary and expanded sentences. The children worked hard to identify powerful verbs and consider how an author's choice of language helps the reader to visualise what is happening. Through discussion and drama activities, we explored the thoughts and feelings of the characters and used these ideas to enhance our writing.
We have been encouraging the children to use precise language and descriptive techniques to bring actions to life, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they share their ideas and writing with their peers.
Reading
Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time. Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.
Maths
This week in Maths, we have been learning about statistics. The children have explored different ways of collecting, presenting and interpreting data, using a range of representations including pictograms, bar charts and Carroll diagrams.
We began by revisiting how information can be organised before moving on to reading and interpreting data from pictograms and bar charts. The children answered questions about the data, compared quantities and used their reasoning skills to explain their answers. They then applied their understanding by creating their own charts and representing information clearly and accurately.
Later in the week, we explored Carroll diagrams, learning how to sort and classify information using different criteria. The children enjoyed discussing where items belonged and explaining their reasoning using mathematical vocabulary. It has been fantastic to see the children develop their confidence in analysing data and recognising patterns.
Thematic Learning – Our Wonderful World
This week, we launched our exciting new topic, Our Wonderful World. The children have loved beginning their learning journey by exploring the natural world and discovering how living things are connected.
We started by investigating food chains and learning about producers, consumers and predators. The children enjoyed identifying the different stages within a food chain and discussing how animals depend on one another for survival. We then moved on to comparing animal habitats, considering how different environments provide animals with the food, water and shelter they need to live.
Through discussion, research and practical activities, the children developed their understanding of how animals adapt to their habitats and the importance of protecting the natural world. We look forward to continuing our exploration of this fascinating topic over the coming weeks.
Home Learning
This week for your home learning it would be great if you could research an animal and look at its habitat and how that habitat meets the animal’s needs.
