We have had another fantastic week of learning in Year 2! The children have continued to demonstrate enthusiasm, curiosity and resilience across all areas of the curriculum. It has been wonderful to see them engaging so positively with their learning. Here is a snapshot of what we have been exploring this week.
English
This week in English, we have continued our work on The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl. Inspired by the story, the children used their imagination to write their own sequel, The Magic Finger 2. It has been fantastic to see the creativity and enthusiasm they have shown when developing their own characters, settings and magical events.
Throughout the week, we have focused on using a range of word classes, including adjectives, verbs and adverbs, to make our writing more engaging and descriptive. The children have also been applying a variety of punctuation, including commas, exclamation marks, question marks and apostrophes, to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of their writing. We have been incredibly impressed with the progress they have made in independently applying the writing skills they have developed throughout the year.
Reading
Reading at 3: Every Friday at 3, our doors will open for you to come in and enjoy a quiet read with your child. This will be for the full 15 minutes, and we kindly ask that children are not taken home early during this time. Reading folders: Some children are bringing home two books – one of these will be a Read Write Inc (RWI) home book, which we ask them to read three times throughout the week to help build fluency. These books will be changed by an adult. The second book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by your child – ideally first thing in the morning. Some children have moved onto the Accelerated Reader programme and will be able to change their books once they’ve completed the quiz online.
Maths
This week in Maths, we have been applying our mathematical knowledge to solve a range of word problems. The children have used their understanding of capacity alongside the four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—to answer practical, real-life problems.
They have worked hard to identify the important information within each question, decide which operation is needed and explain their reasoning. The children have shown great perseverance when tackling multi-step problems and have become more confident in selecting appropriate strategies to solve them. It has been wonderful to see them applying their mathematical skills across different contexts.
Thematic Learning – Our Wonderful World
This week in our Wonderful World topic, we have been developing our geographical skills through map work. The children explored different types of maps before learning how to use compass directions to navigate.
Using their new knowledge, the children worked together to plot routes around the school grounds using the four main compass points: north, south, east and west. They enjoyed following and creating directions for one another, developing their understanding of positional language and map-reading skills. It has been fantastic to see the children confidently applying their geographical knowledge through practical activities.
Home learning
This week we would like to create a fact file about yourself that you will be able to share with your new teacher soon.
