One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly Blog - 19/10/23

This week, Year 2 has been busy with lots of exciting learning across English, Maths and RE.

English

In English, we planned and wrote our own fairy tale narratives. We started by revisiting nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs before exploring a model fairy tale and magpie-ing ambitious vocabulary and ideas.

Throughout the week, we:

  • Planned our own fairy tale using a beginning, middle and ending structure.
  • Orally rehearsed our stories with partners.
  • Wrote the opening of our stories, focusing on using the past tense.
  • Wrote the middle section, ensuring our sentences were punctuated correctly.
  • Completed the ending, experimenting with different sentence openers.
  • Edited and improved our work by checking spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and sentence openers.

In reading, we enjoyed fairy tale texts together, including examples linked to Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood, collecting ideas and vocabulary that we can use in our own writing.

In our spelling sessions, we practised this term's red words: was, said, some, come, when, what, school, once, friend.

You can try practicing these at home!

Maths

This week we continued developing our addition and subtraction strategies.

The children learnt to:

  • Use number bonds to 10 to help add three single-digit numbers.
  • Reorder addends to make addition calculations easier to solve mentally.
  • Use rebalancing strategies when adding or subtracting 9 and 11.
  • Use the "think addition" strategy to solve subtraction calculations by finding the missing part.

We used practical resources such as tens frames, counters, Cuisenaire rods, bead strings and multilink cubes to explain and prove our mathematical thinking.

RE

In RE, we learnt about leadership and why leaders are important within different communities.

The children:

  • Found out about leaders in school and the roles they carry out.
  • Explored the challenges and responsibilities of leadership.
  • Learnt about global religious leaders and their special books.
  • Investigated the names, clothing, places of worship, holy books and duties of local religious leaders.

Love 2 Learn

In our thematic topic next term we will be learning about the Great Fire of London. For your love 2 learn task you can research the Great Fire of London and write down some key facts in your love 2 learn book. For example:
