One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 6/11/26

Welcome back, Year 2! We hope everyone has had a lovely, relaxing October half-term and enjoyed a well-deserved break. We are so excited to have the children back in the classroom and ready for another busy and exciting half-term of learning!

SPAG

In SPaG, we have been practising our red words in lots of fun and exciting ways! We have been using different activities to help us remember how to read and spell them, including having a go at writing and drawing them with chalk on the playground. The children have really enjoyed taking their learning outside and practising their red words in a creative way!

English

In English, we have been exploring the wonderful story The Gruffalo's Child. We have been developing our reading comprehension skills by asking and answering questions about the story, thinking carefully about what has happened and using clues from the text and illustrations to support our answers. We have also been practising clarifying our understanding by discussing unfamiliar words and sharing our thoughts with our friends.

Another important part of our learning has been sequencing the events of the story in the correct order. We have been thinking about what happened at the beginning, middle and end, using our knowledge of the story to help us retell it. The children have loved sharing their ideas, making predictions and discussing their favourite parts of the story. It has been lovely to see their confidence grow as they become more thoughtful and enthusiastic readers!

Maths

In Maths, we have been developing our addition skills by adding multiples of 10 to numbers up to 100. We have been using our understanding of place value to help us recognise what happens to a number when we add another 10, 20, 30 or more.

Alongside this, we have been working hard on our number bonds to 10 and 20. We have explored different ways of making these numbers and practised recalling our number bonds quickly and confidently. To make our learning fun, we have been using playing cards to play different maths games, challenging ourselves to find number bonds and recall our facts as quickly as possible. The children have really enjoyed learning through games and working together to improve their fluency.

Keep practising those number bonds at home – the quicker we can recall them, the easier we will find our maths!

Home learning

This week for your home learning we would like you to practice your spellings of your RED WORDS (common exception words) by writing a short, silly story including as many of these as possible. As always be as creative as you can!

AR Reading

If your child has an AR login please practice logging in and accessing books with your child to support them in logging in when we take quizzes in class. Thank you!
