One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News –23.02.26

Year 3 have blown us away this week, they have shown great effort, enthusiasm and courage with all of their learning this week.

Maths
This week in maths we have been developing our subtraction skills and applying our existing knowledge of number facts and place value to solve a range of problems with increasing confidence and accuracy. Next week we will be developing our multiplication skills, multiplying 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using short multiplication.

English
This week in English we have been preparing and writing our speeches for The Speaker competition. Next week we will be starting our new book for the term Enid Blyton’s Magic Faraway Tree. We will begin by writing a character description of one the characters but not using their name to see if people can guess who we have described.

Thematic
This week we have focused on PSHE, thinking about the British Values and thinking about our feelings. Next week we will begin our new topic in Thematic Revolutionary Romans. We will start with some Geography, naming and locating counties, we will learn what a city is and how they are different to counties and finally, we will look at a European map locating and identifying different countries and their capital cities.

World Book Day Thursday 5th March 2026

This year’s World Book Day theme will be books that make us laugh.  We invite children to dress up as their favourite book or character for World Book Day. The children will take part in a variety of fun activities throughout the day. All children will receive their £1 World Book Day Voucher.  This can be used at our school Book Fayre or in shops.

Chilton Book Fayre

The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 9th March and run until Friday 13th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. Children will come home with a World Book Day book voucher.  These can be spent at the Book Fayre. Cash and online payments are also available, and a percentage of the monies raised will go towards funding more books for Chilton children.

Reading competition

We will be running a reading competition the week of World Book Day (week beginning 2nd March).  We would like the children to read as many books as they can in a funny or unusual place! Please take a picture of these and email them to Mrs Rowland-Hill (helen.rowland@chiltonprimary.co.uk) A winner from Ks1 and a winner from KS2 with the most books read in a funny and usual place will win a prize! Deadline for entries is Monday 9th March 2026.

Art Competition

NEW ART COMPETITON – DEADLINE 4th MARCH 2026

We would love to see children from Chilton entering the following art competition hosted by the Royal Academy of Arts. Families will be asked to submit their children’s artwork via the following link (you will need to register):

https://youngartists.royalacademy.org.uk/get-involved#artworks

ABOUT THE COMPETITON

Each student can submit one piece of artwork and there is no theme. When you enter, they will ask for an image of the artwork plus some information about the piece such as title, size, and some text written by the artist which can include why they created the work and what it means to them. Their panel of judges will see the artwork and the selected pieces will be shown in an online exhibition. Some of the artworks will also be shown at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Full details can be found on their website:

Young Artists' Summer Show | Royal Academy

We are very excited to see your submissions!

Good Luck! From Mrs Barlow and Mrs Howard

Home Learning
The Viking Speaker Competition – this week for Home Learning, we have sent home the speeches that the children have written in class this week. We would like the children to practice them in preparation for presenting them to their class next week. Their speech can be edited if they would like to but can be no longer than 2 minutes. In English this week we have looked at what makes a good speech:

- emotive language

- repetition

- addressing the audience (rhetorical questions)

- use conjunctions (because, but etc)

They may want to type their speech up to make it easier for them to read and practice.
