One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 28.09.2026

Well done Year 3 for a great week! We are continuously impressed by your enthusiasm to learn!

Maths

During our Maths lessons this week, we finished our learning on place value for this term and began looking at rounding! We designed posters to remember the rhyme – zero to four, slide down to the floor, five to nine, climb the vine! We then began rounding two-digit numbers to the nearest 10, and then some of us challenged ourselves with rounding three-digit numbers to the nearest hundred!

Next week in Maths, we will start our unit on Measure. We will be exploring appropriate units of measure for both weight and length.

English

This week our English lessons focussed on research! We started the week looking at Stone Age poo! Yuck! We dissected it to look for clues about what pre-historic people would have eaten. We then carried out some research, gathering facts about what they ate, how they got their food and how food changed over time. Within this, we used a range of sentence types, including simple and compound sentences.

On Wednesday, we had our National Poetry Day lesson! We read through some silly and funny poems, then focussed on ‘Werewolf Club Rules’ by Joseph Coelho. We really enjoyed this poem and had a go at writing a class one about a different creature, then some of us had a go at writing our own in the same style!

Next week in English, our focus will be all about play scripts! We will be learning the features of a play script, then writing our own, incorporating our learning from SPaG of adjectives, verbs and adverbs.

Thank you for supporting your children with reading 4 times a week at home! Please could you ensure your child’s book is in school every day as we read with them throughout the week, thank you.

There is an update on how to use AR at home with your children under the Accelerated Reader tab on our school website! Please have a look!

Thematic

In Thematic this week, we have really delved into the History side of the Stone Age. We started the week with our trip down to Pegwell Bay, where we put our learning about rocks and fossils into practise! We had SUCH a wonderful time!

This term in Thematic, we travelled through time to see what happened after the Stone Age: the Bronze and Iron Ages! We uncovered how cultures differed from one period to the next, imagined the challenges people faced and the clever ways they solved them, and followed the incredible journey of farming from Neolithic times all the way to today!

Home Learning

This week's home learning is a creative challenge! Using what we've learned over the last few weeks, your task is to create your own Stone Age tool or weapon. You might choose a hand axe, a spear, a sickle or a plough!

You have two options: you can design your tool by drawing or sketching it and labelling its parts and materials, or you can make it for real using materials you have at home, such as cardboard, clay, sticks, or recycled items. Whichever you choose, the choice is yours!

Think about how people in the Stone Age would have used your creation and what it would have helped them to do, whether that's hunting, building, preparing food, or making clothing. Be as inventive as you like and bring your finished design or creation into class to share. We can't wait to see what you come up with!
