One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 05.10.2026

Year 3 have really impressed us with their confidence and wonderful speaking skills during our Harvest assembly on Tuesday — a huge well done to them!

Maths

During our Maths lessons this week,  we started our unit on Measure. We explored appropriate units of measure for both weight and length. We started the week with millimetres, centimetres and metres! We practised using a ruler, lining it up with the 0, and learning the difference between an approximate and accurate measurement. We then moved onto weight, looking and grams and kilograms. We learnt how it is important to check the scales on weighing scales as they can all look slightly different!

Next week in Maths, we will be focusing on using mental methods for adding, we will be using a variety of manipulatives to support us with adding with and without regrouping.

Times Table Rock Stars

Children should aim to play for 5-10 minutes each day, the expectation is that by the end of Year 3 children will know the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables. TTRS is designed to be a fun way of practicing these times tables. It is broken down into 8 game types.

Gig – this creates a heatmap to show times tables knowledge up to 12x12

Garage – this is a teacher set times tables game. Please complete this at home.

Jamming – a game to develop times tables confidence

Studio - games the are aimed at motivating (how many can you do in a set time etc) after 10 games this will give a rock status.

Festival and Arena – you can compete against other children from other schools

Rock Slam – you can choose to challenge anyone from within the school (adults and children)

English

This week our English lessons have focussed on play scripts. We have been absolutely blown away with the children’s writing this week! Not only have they loved reading and acting them in our Guided Reading lessons, but they have learned the features and written them with accuracy throughout our English lessons!

We will be carrying on with the theme of playscripts next week, but this time, writing our own Stone Age play! We can’t wait to see what the children come up with.

Thank you for supporting your children with reading 4 times a week at home! Please could you ensure your child’s book is in school every day as we read with them throughout the week, thank you.

Quizzing on Books at Home

As a part of reading at Chilton, we use Accelerated Reader for the children to ‘quiz’ on the books they have read to ensure comprehension understanding. This is how you can do this at home:

When logging into Accelerated Reader you will need to access it by using that link below:

https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

To login, you will need to select the student option and use the login information provided. Your child's login is stuck in the front of their reading record. Once you are logged in you will have access to the Accelerated Reader website. Please see below for attachment of a detailed guide.

Thematic

In Thematic this week, we have explored the differences in culture between the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. We have looked at their ceramics, how they were made and how archaeologists tell the difference. We explored artistic expression and had a go at some cave paintings! Finally, we learned about how technology changed over time (including the invention of the wheel in the Bronze Age!)

Next week, we will be learning all about the Bronze Age boat discovered in Dover!

Home Learning

This week in Maths we have been looking at weighing in grams and kilograms, could you weigh or find the weights of items in your house. Feel free to take some pictures, maybe follow a recipe or record it in your Home Learning book.
