Weekly News 19.9.25

We've had another great week in Year 4. This is what we have been up to..
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning to add using the column method. The children have learnt to solve calculations that involve regrouping in all columns e.g. 4837 + 3294 =. The children have been incredibly skilled at this and have blown Mr Cook and Mrs Cousins away with how accurate they are with this method. They used the column method to solve problems and answer reasoning questions, and they also identified mistakes in column method calculations, using their mathematical language to explain the mistakes in sentences.
Next week, we will be learning to subtract using the column method and solving 2 step problems involving addition and subtraction.
English
In English this week we have been learning to write recounts. These recount events and are written in past tense and usually first person such as letters, postcards and diary entries. We have learnt to use time conjunctions as sentence openers to show the chronology of the events we recount such as;
First of all, ... The next day,... Later that afternoon, ... One evening,..
We then learnt that a good recount should use emotive language and the children really enjoyed showing opposing viewpoints of 2 of the characters in Gregory Cool. We also learnt to use compound sentences in a recount using FANBOYS co-ordinating conjunctions (for, and, but, or, yet, so).
Next week we will begin reading our next text called The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, and we will be learning to write character descriptions.
Thematic
In thematic we have continued with our science learning in our theme 'Make some noise'. First of all, we learnt about volume. We found out that sound travels in waves and that if a sound wave has a lot of energy, it will create a loud sound and if it has a small amount of energy, the wave will be smaller and the sound will be soft/quiet. We also learnt about pitch and found out that high pitch sounds are made when an object vibrates quickly and the sound wave will have waves very close together. Low pitch sounds are created when an objects vibrates more slowly and the waves are more spread out. We made mini panpipes using straws to investigate which straw would make the highest pitch sound and which the lowest pitch sound. We finished off the week planning an experiment that we will conduct on Tuesday. If we drop an object from different heights, will the sound when it hits the floor gets louder and fainter the higher we drop it?
Here we are making our panpipes...
Spellings

Love to Learn
This week's task is maths. Choose 5 of these calculations and work out the answers using the column method.
348 + 127 = 4892 + 1091 = 893 + 84 = 6937 + 5489 = 325 + 141 = 8302 + 1373 =
8756 + 6437 = 12,683 + 43,707 =
Other messages
Thank you to all who were able to come in on Wednesday morning for our 'Meet and Greet' session in class. Please see the information given during the meet and greet below.
Our thematic units this year
- Make some noise
- Walk like an Egyptian
- Cracking the Earth's core (about volcanoes, earthquakes and the structure of the Earth)
- Innovation Station (we learn about the Golden Age of Islam in this unit)
- Water World (we learn about the water cycle)

Life in Year 4
-Most lessons start with a shout out for amazing learning in the previous lesson.
-Superstar learner cards are exchanged for 5 house points.
-We have a class 100 square and we are aiming for 25, 50, 75 hundred squares to get a reward, and if we get to 100 squares we will have a party!
Helping at home
-Please read at home as often as possible. Complete the AR quiz for books you read at home. Year 4 expectation is to read 4 times a week.
-TTRS as often as possible
-Spellings to learn for a test on Thursdays
- Love to learn task
Times Tables Check
In June the children will take a times tables check online set by the government to assess how they’re doing with their times tables.
-We work hard to prepare them for this.
-It's very low key and not at all stressful.
-Please don’t worry!
-Please play TTRS as much as possible.
