One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 20.3.26

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 4, with lots of great learning taking place across the curriculum.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been focusing on decimal numbers. The children have recapped their understanding of tenths and hundredths, and have worked hard on converting, comparing and ordering decimals. We ended the week with a fun, practical session outside, where the children solved decimal problems on the playground—applying their learning in a more active way.

Next week, we will be moving on to time, where we will be learning how to read, write and convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time.

English

In English, we have continued developing our persuasive writing skills. The children have been using compound and complex sentences, along with rhetorical questions and short, snappy sentences to make their writing more effective and engaging.

Next week, we will begin a new unit on newspaper reports, where the children will learn how to write in a formal style and report on events clearly.

Thematic

In our thematic learning, we have continued our science topic on electricity and circuits. This week, the children added switches to their simple circuits and carried out an investigation to identify which materials are conductors and which are insulators. They showed great curiosity and teamwork during this practical work.

Next week, we will be moving on to Design and Technology, where the children will begin designing and creating their own toy—we are looking forward to seeing their creativity!

Spellings

Spellings to learn this week are:

swimming, digging, clapping, dropping, wrapping, cutting, chatting, knitting, forgetting, slamming

Challenge words: travelling, beginning, controlling, patrolling, permitting

RED WORDS position, possess and possession

Love to Learn

Your Love to Learn challenge this week is to write a persuasive piece of writing about something you are passionate about. It could be introducing a new lesson into school, not wearing uniform or having a class pet. It is up to you!

Please continue to read at home at least 4 times a week and play TTRS as often as possible.
