One Childhood, One Chance

4.9.26 Weekly News!

Welcome Back, Year 4!

What a fantastic first two days we have had! It has been so lovely to welcome everyone back to school and, most importantly, to see so many smiling faces as the children came through the door.

The children have settled in brilliantly and have already shown what a wonderful start we are going to have in Year 4. We have been busy getting to know our new routines, revisiting our expectations and, of course, getting stuck into some exciting learning!

Here is a little look at what we have been up to over our first two days and what we will be getting up to next week.

English

We have started our new class book, Gregory Cool, which tells the story of a boy who is visiting his grandparents in Tobago.

So far, we have met Gregory and discovered where his grandparents live. We have been busy exploring the setting and thinking carefully about how we can describe the house using expanded noun phrases.

The children have produced some fantastic descriptions and have already shown great enthusiasm for our new book. We are looking forward to finding out what happens next!

Next week in English, we will continue reading Gregory Cool and begin exploring a range of different word types and language features, including verbs, adverbs, similes and prepositions. We can't wait to see where the story takes us!

Maths

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value up to thousands.

We have used Dienes equipment and place value counters to build numbers practically, helping us to understand the value of each digit within a number.

For example, the number 3,462 has:

  • 3 thousands

  • 4 hundreds

  • 6 tens

  • 2 ones

The children have enjoyed using the practical resources to build and partition numbers and have made a fantastic start to our Year 4 place value learning.

Next week in Maths, we will be learning to add and subtract 1,000 and will also be comparing and ordering numbers up to 10,000.

PSHE

In PSHE, we have been learning about our new Culture Policy and discussing some of the small changes that have been introduced.

We have looked at the things that are staying the same, including our Superstar Learner Cards and Over and Above recognition. We have also discussed the new Chance to Change Card and Stop and Share, thinking carefully about how these link to our school rules and expectations.

The children have shared some thoughtful ideas and have been developing their understanding of how our new Culture Policy will help us to make our school a positive, respectful and supportive place to learn.

Next week in PSHE, we will continue learning about our Culture Policy and begin linking it to our Chilton Values and our Regulation Stations.

Spellings for next week are: people, parents, everybody, whole, beautiful, because, children, thought, February different

What a Great Start!

We are incredibly proud of how well the children have settled into Year 4 over these first two days. They have worked hard, listened carefully, shown kindness to one another and, most importantly, brought lots of smiles and enthusiasm into the classroom.

We are looking forward to another fantastic week of learning together!
