We have had an amazing second week with Year 4! Here is what we have been up to...

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about number. We have been finding 1000 more and 1000 less than a given 4-digit number, comparing numbers using the vocabulary greater and less, and the comparison symbols < > and =. The children then learnt how to put numbers in order, either in ascending order or descending order.

Next week, we will be partitioning numbers in different ways, partitioning by regrouping thousands, hundreds or tens and then moving on to estimating numbers on number lines.

English

In English this week we have read some more of our class book Gregory Cool by Maeve Binch. We have explored some more of the settings in the story including a beautiful Tobagonian beach. The children have continued to learn skills to write a good setting description. We have learnt to use verbs and adverbs to show what things are doing or how they are moving e.g. a lizard scuttled rapidly across the ceiling. We also learnt to use adverbs as fronted adverbials (sentence openers) e.g. Happily, the cows munched on the tall, emerald green grass. We have used prepositions to show where the thing is that we are describing e.g. beneath the blazing, amber sun. We finished off the week learning to use similes to describe a setting from the book e.g. the trees as tall as skyscrapers, or the river snaked like a snake.

Next week, the children will be writing their showpiece for this settings unit and trying to pull together all of the skills that they have learnt to make a good setting description. We will then be starting our new unit learning how to write recounts such as letters and diary entries.

PSHE

In PSHE this week we have been thinking about our Chilton Motto ‘One Childhood, One Chance’ and learning about our school values; kindness, respect, courage and equality. The children made their own Top Trump card, levelling themselves in each of the values out of 10. It was great to see them really reflecting upon which values they are confident in showing and which they feel they need to still work on. We also spent some time this week finding out about the Regulation Station in class which is a place we can go if our emotions are not regulated and we need to re-regulate. We explore some of the resources that are in the Regulation Station to help us such as a body map, breathing techniques and the ‘Sizing my Problem’ card.

Next week we will begin our first thematic unit called ‘Make some Noise!’, in which we will find out all about sound and how we hear sounds.

Spellings to practice this week for a test on Thursday are:

clapped, dropped, wrapped, chatted, knitted, slammed, rained, jumped, walked, visited, opened, entered, accident, accidentally, occasion

Love to Learn

For your first Love to Learn task we would like you to decorate your Love to Learn book. You could cover it in pictures of you, draw pictures of things you love and colour them in, cover it in your favourite things e.g. your favourite animals or football team, whatever you like! Enjoy and we look forward to seeing them.

Other information

Please try to read with your child at least 4 times a week and send their reading book and record into school every day to be checked by their teacher.

PE is on Wednesdays this term.

8th October - Harvest Festival for Year 4 at 9am and Year 5 and 6 at 2.45pm

23rd October – Halloween Disco – All children come to school in fancy dress. Year 1, 2 and 3 Disco from 2pm-3pm and year 4, 5 and 6 disco from 3.15-4.15
