What a fantastic week of learning we have had in Year 4! The children have worked hard across all areas of the curriculum and have shown great enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity. Here’s a look at what we have been learning this week.

English

This week, we finished reading our class book, Gregory Cool, which took us on an exciting journey alongside Gregory during his visit to Tobago. To build on our understanding of the story, we began writing recounts about the events that happened throughout Gregory’s visit.

The children explored how we can retell events from different characters’ perspectives. We wrote a postcard as Gregory, thinking carefully about what he might have seen, experienced and felt during his time in Tobago. We then switched perspectives and wrote a diary entry as Lennox.

As part of our writing, we focused on using the past tense, first person, time conjunctions and emotive language to make our recounts engaging and effective. The children have enjoyed putting themselves in the characters’ shoes and using their imaginations to bring the events of the story to life. 

Next week, we will be finishing our recount writing about Gregory Cool and starting a new and exciting book called Iron Man!

Maths

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value and numbers. We began the week by exploring how numbers can be partitioned in different ways, helping us to recognise the value of each digit and understand that numbers can be represented in more than one way.

Later in the week, we moved on to estimating numbers on number lines. We practised identifying different intervals and estimating where numbers would be positioned when the number line had different starting and ending points.

The children have been developing their reasoning skills and have been encouraged to explain how they know where a number should be placed, rather than simply giving an answer. 

Next week, we will be moving on to rounding to the nearest 10,100 and 1000.

Thematic

We have also launched our exciting new Thematic topic, Make Some Noise! We began by investigating the question: What is sound and how is it made?

The children discovered that sounds are made when objects vibrate and explored how these vibrations create sound waves. We investigated how sound travels through the air and began to understand that sound moves in waves.

We also explored how we hear sounds, learning about the different parts of the ear and the important role they play in helping us hear. From the outer ear to the eardrum and beyond, we discovered how vibrations are eventually transformed into signals that our brains can understand as sound.

It has been a brilliant start to our new topic, and we are excited to continue investigating sound and discovering just how much there is to Make Some Noise about!

Love to Learn

For your love to learn this week, can you create a poster about our new thematic topic Make Some Noise. Think about what we have learnt so far about vibrations and how sound travels. Make it as colourful and bright as you want.

Please try to read with your child at least 4 times a week and send their reading book and record into school every day to be checked by their teacher.

PE is on Wednesdays this term.

23rd October – Halloween Disco – All children come to school in fancy dress. Year 1, 2 and 3 Disco from 2pm-3pm and year 4, 5 and 6 disco from 3.15-4.15
