One Childhood, One Chance

31.10.2025 Weekly News!

Year 5 have wasted no time getting back into the swing of things this term so far. Our first week back has been just as busy as any other, with swimming starting and Halloween providing some light entertainment!

English

This week, we learnt how to use figurative language to describe a character. We were given the task of inventing an alien and we drew these in detail. After that, we gathered ideas for figurative language and then used these to write a paragraph about the alien’s appearance. We also started reading our class text: The Jamie Drake Equation.

Next week, we will be planning, drafting and writing our second paragraph about our alien: its personality. We will also be painting the planet our alien lives on and using this as inspiration for a setting description.  We will learn how the words we choose help us create mood and atmosphere.

Maths

This week, we have been learning how to read and interpret line graphs. We learned about the y and x axis and that line graphs show changes over time. We then progressed onto solving word problems based on these graphs. Some of us learned how to read and interpret line graphs with two sets of data on one graph.

Next week, we will be learning how to find equivalent fractions, using a common denominator. We will also then be comparing and ordering fractions. After that, we will be learning how to find fractions of amounts, when the dominator is more than 1.

Thematic

This week, we have started our new theme called Star Gazers. We have written lots of questions and also started to learn about our position in space. We have learnt about the meaning of these words: star, solar system and galaxy. We have also learnt about the scientists Aristotle and Galileo and how what they found out has changed what we know about space.

Next week, we will be learning about the planets in our solar system and how we can group them into rock planets and gas planets. We will present what we have found out to our peers.

Spelling

In your child’s reading record, there is a sticker with the words they are learning for this term. We call these ‘red words’ and they are tricky or impossible to sound out using phonics. Some children have been given some challenging space-themed words to also learn. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Love to Learn

For this week’s challenge, we are setting a 2-week project. Please make a model or detailed scientific diagram of something linked to our solar system. It could be a model of the whole solar system or just one of the planets. Be creative!
