Week 2 has been a busy one but definitely a fun one! Our highlight has to be World Book Day on Thursday. With the day starting with the staff performing in their pants as aliens in assembly, there were many laughs and giggles throughout the school day. We loved all your efforts to come to school dressed as a book character. We also read a book called ‘Don’t open this book’ by Andy Lee. Using this as inspiration, we made our own books and then performed a puppet show based on our books. We also enjoyed a story during our ‘teacher story time swap’.
English
This week, we read the prologue of The Adventures of Odysseus and found out the backstory. We then predicted what we thought the genre of the story would be and also what the ending might be. Using what we know already about Greek myths and other stories, we gave reasons for our predictions. After that, we then read chapter 1. We also spent time creating our own mythical creatures and gathering ideas for their appearance, diet and special powers. Some of us planned a paragraph on the creature’s backstory.
Next week, we will continue to read The Adventure of Odysseus and find out what happens next in the story. We will also continue writing our non-chronological reports. Our focus will be on using technical vocabulary to make us sound like an expert and inform the reader. We will also learn how to use parenthesis in our paragraphs about our creature’s special power or backstory.
Maths
This week, we learned about money. We refreshed what we know about pounds and pence and also linked this to decimals. Using ‘part part whole’ mental methods and also using formal written methods, we practised adding and subtracting amounts of money. We also solved addition and subtraction money problems, sometimes using the bar model approach.
Next week, we will begin by learning about our problem-solving type for this term: working backwards. We will then return to learning more about how to tell the time. We will rehearse telling the time to one-minute intervals and then also learn how to convert between different units of time. Using that knowledge of time conversions, we will then solve problems.
Spelling
In your child’s reading record, there is a sticker with the words they are learning. We call these ‘red words’ and they are tricky or impossible to sound out using phonics. Some children have been given some challenging words to learn. Thank you in advance for your support with this. There will be a spelling test at the end of the term on these words.
Love to Learn
This week, we would like you to become an architect. We would like you to research the style of architecture found in Ancient Greece and show us what you have learned. You might choose to study a particular building or a style of architecture. You may even simply look at the patterns used on the building. You could make a model, architectural drawing or even a piece of artwork of a building.
Alongside this, we would like you to prepare a costume to wear for our Ancient Greece Day on Wednesday 25th March.
Chilton Book Fayre
The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 9th March and run until Friday 13th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. Children will come home with a World Book Day book voucher. These can be spent at the Book Fayre. Cash and online payments are also available, and a percentage of the monies raised will go towards funding more books for Chilton children.
Reading competition
We will be running a reading competition the week of World Book Day (week beginning 2nd March). We would like the children to read as many books as they can in a funny or unusual place! Please take a picture of these and email them to Mrs Rowland-Hill (helen.rowland@chiltonprimary.co.uk) A winner from Ks1 and a winner from KS2 with the most books read in a funny and usual place will win a prize! Deadline for entries is Monday 9th March 2026.
