One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 08.05.26

What a wonderful week it has been in Year 5! The children have worked incredibly hard across all subjects and have shown great enthusiasm for their learning — especially during our trip to Ramsgate Harbour and Pegwell Beach.

English
This week in English, we have been learning how to begin a narrative by grabbing the reader’s attention. We discussed the importance of keeping the reader in mind when writing — after all, we want people to enjoy our stories and feel compelled to keep reading!

The children experimented with starting the same narrative in a variety of ways, including opening with speech, action and description. Having these different techniques in our writing “toolbelt” will help to ensure our work is not only high quality, but also engaging and exciting for the reader.

Next week, we will be writing as journalists, reporting on different aspects of Victorian London.

Maths
This week in Maths, we have continued working on dividing numbers to give decimal answers. The children then applied this knowledge to realistic word problems, many of which required more than one calculation or operation.

These types of problems can be challenging, but they are incredibly important because they allow us to see how maths is used in real life. They also help us understand the “why” behind our learning and put our mathematical knowledge into context.

Next week, we will be converting fractions into their decimal equivalents.

Thematic
This week, we moved into the geographical section of our topic, Tides of Change. We learnt about erosion and deposition, and how these processes can gradually shape and change coastlines over time. As a coastal town, we certainly would not want all our cliffs to erode away, so we also explored the different sea defences used to help protect coastlines.

We ended the week with a trip to Ramsgate Harbour and Pegwell Beach, where we searched for the historical landmarks we had been learning about and identified both the human and physical geographical features we had studied this week. It was a lovely trip — the sun was shining and it was a fantastic opportunity to see our learning brought to life in person.

Spelling
Please continue practising this term’s red words at home. There will be a test on these during the final week of term.

Love to Learn
We have been doing origami in Art this term and have had great fun learning different techniques and creations. For this week’s Love to Learn task, we would like you to find and make an origami creation that we have not tried in class. There are lots of brilliant tutorials online, so we are excited to see what you can create!
