One Childhood, One Chance

Week Beginning 01.12.2025

Year 6 Home learning

  1. We would like the children to write or print the lyrics to their favourite Christmas song for our Reading for Pleasure lesson next week.  Please can the children keep their chosen song a secret so that others can try and guess the song in the lesson! Our Reading for Pleasure lesson will be Thursday 11th Dec.

  2. MYON - We would like the children to read another book on MyOn.  These books are about maps as we have been learning about maps and how to use them.  Please can the children complete a quiz when they have read the book (s).  Access MyOn here https://www.myon.co.uk/login/index.html

  3. We would like the children to make a 3D shape from their own 3D net.  Here are some examples...

This week the children planned and started to write their own 5-part narrative that gives an alternative ending to the book Skellig.  We have planned a beginning that includes a description of a setting, a build-up to a problem, a main event, a resolution and then an ending.  The children focused on describing, speech and action. In their Reading for Pleasure sessions, the children read instructions on how to make a paper snowflake!

Maths

Year 6 spent a week learning about 3D shapes, their properties (edges, vertices/vertex, faces), then moved on to nets and which nets were matched to the 3D shapes.  Year 6 finished the week learning about volume and how to calculate volume – click here to access a video about volume and what the children have learnt this week. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zcrxtyc#zxty7v4

Thematic

Year 6 moved on to geography this week and learnt how to read a map using a 6-figure grid reference.  Here is a great video of what that is https://www.ukclimbing.com/videos/categories/instruction/how_to_take_a_6-figure_grid_reference_with_steve_backshall+ordnance_survey-3409

The children also learnt about the symbols that are found on ordnance survey maps.
