English

This week the children started their commentary writing for the documentary – Snakes vs Iguana.  Watch the video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el4CQj-TCbA The children focused on sounding like an expert, verbs and adverbs to describe the action as well as using ambitious vocabulary and punctuation. As part of their punctuation and grammar challenge, the children were tasked to include a passive voice. Here is a video about passive and active voice (Team Cobalt is a huge fan of this one!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olS2Hu-HRJc

Year 6 will continue this writing next week.  As part of our Reading for Pleasure, Year 6 explored cookery books and used their knowledge from their Thematic lessons to find recipes that were healthy.

Maths

The children took part in practical maths this week as part of our NSPCC Number Day.  We started the week buying items from a shop (the children were given a fictional budget of £20 in Mr Wheeler's supermarket and £20 in Mrs Rowland-Hill's bookshop.  The children played the Game of Life in Mrs Bax's room too.  The children were also tasked with furnishing their own bedroom on a budget of £500.  They used the Argos website to work within their budget! The children ended the week using Skittles to answer multiple questions linked to number, ratio, fractions and decimals. Next week, the children will learn how to answer calculations using Order of Operations (BIDMAS) and sequencing numbers.  Here is BIDMAS explained: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opmBUyg9dJ0

Thematic

We finished our How to Mind Your Heart topic this week.  We ended this with completing some market research linked to healthy snacks.  The children asked 20 adults around the school what they would rather like: a sweet or savoury flapjack.  Their results were SAVOURY so the children planned and made a savoury flapjack.  Their baking was very successful and tasty!
