Welcome back to Year 6! It has been a seamless start already and we are really proud of all the children for their positive attitudes so far. We have spent our time this week learning about some of the changes to our Culture Policy and also exploring how our Chilton Way rules underpin everything we do: Be Safe. Be Ready. Be Respectful.
We have used drama to explore how we can show good manners to keep to the rule of Be Respectful. We have discussed what can happen to us and others when we don't follow these Chilton Way rules, both now and in future as we get older. We talked in depth about the fact that following these rules are how we become happy adults and allow others to be happy adults in the future. We also discussed how consequences at Chilton will be logical and linked to the behaviour that isn't showing the Chilton Way. For example, if we are repeatedly being unsafe when playing football outside at lunchtime and we have ignored all the positive reminders and support from staff to make safe choices, the consequence might be that we won't be allowed to play football for a period of time.
This week, all year 6 children have chosen a book to read for pleasure. Please do enjoy these at home together. Once we have assessed your child and have their current AR data, we will send home their reading records and an appropriate book.
English
Next week, we will be introduced to our first class text: Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick. We will use our reading skill of inference to find out as much about possible about the book before we start reading it. We will then move on to unpick the relationship between two of the main characters and start writing in role.
Maths
During our lessons next week, we will begin by focusing on place value. We will learn about the value of each place value column and rehearse this by reading and writing large numbers. We will also rehearse counting and regrouping large numbers. Once this knowledge is secure, we will then compare and order numbers and challenge ourselves to do this with numbers up to 3 decimal places.
PSHE
Next week's afternoons will be spent using 3 different texts to explore the themes of kindness, courage, equality and respect. We will explore these by reading the texts, creating artwork based on them and also role playing these themes.
Home Learning
We know some of you are very busy at home getting yourselves ready for the Kent Test next week. Therefore, this week's home learning are two simple tasks:

Log into MyOn and read a book of your choice. Please quiz on this book. Your password is now Viking26

Log into TTRS and spend at least 10 minutes practising your times tables. If you have a Doodle account, you could complete 10 minutes of Maths on there instead. Doodle passwords are now Viking26

7th September – Year 5 and 6 Meet the teacher at 2.45pm - This is an opportunity to meet your child’s teaching team and get to hear about what to expect in the year ahead.
10th September – Kent Test for Year 6
14th -17th September – Year 6 go to Carroty Wood
25th September – Chilton Fundraisers Family Quiz (more details to follow from the Chilton Fundraisers)
8th October - Harvest Festival for Year 4 at 9am and year 5 and 6 at 2.45pm
15th October – Kent Test Results out to parents
23rd October – Halloween Disco – All children come to school in fancy dress. Year 1, 2 and 3 Disco from 2pm-3pm and year 4, 5 and 6 disco from 3.15-4.15
23rd October – Final day of term
