In Topic this term, the children enjoyed learning about Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution.  In the Galapagos Islands, Darwin noticed that birds of the same species had adapted the shapes of their beaks to suit their differing environments.  This week, as part of the children's exit point, we were visited by Mr. Mitchell who shared with us how we can protect the birds in our surroundings.  We were challenged to design our own bird boxes (great job on the Loves to Learn!) and on Friday he came back to place them around the school.  We hope to encourage lots of wildlife to our school.

At the start of the week, we visited the Al-Birr community centre and mosque in Margate as part of our RE topic. Here the children had the opportunity to ask questions and have a guided tour of the Mosque. The children were a credit to us, asking meaningful questions and recalling information they had previously been taught.

In Maths, the children continued to calculate percentages of amounts and solve problems involving percentages. They then moved onto  applying their number skills and solved word problems using the four operations.

In English, we linked our writing to the topic of Charles Darwin. The children created a newspaper article based on the reception that he received after publishing his theory of evolution. The children interviewed each other in role as the relevant observers and wrote their opinions using direct and indirect quotes.

Next term, we will be reading Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. The children will begin by writing a newspaper report linked to the text applying the skills developed this term. In Maths, the children will be focusing on algebra and BIDMAS - the order of operations.

World Book Day  

World Book Day is on Thursday 3^rd March.  Children are invited to dress up as any character from a book.  They can also bring in a book to share with their class. 

Throughout the day, the children will read a variety of stories with their class teacher and hear other adults read their favourite story or poem via a video link. The children’s learning during the day will focus on ‘Poetry for All’ and every class will explore a different poetry text.  The children will take part in reading and performing poetry, writing creatively and exploring the text’s illustrations to inspire their writing. 

All children have been given a reading bingo card that offers a wide range of challenges that they can complete at home (either one challenge or many). Please sign your child’s bingo card and return to school by Friday 4^th March.  Winners will be chosen and prizes will be given. 

Children in years 2-6 will be set a MyOn reading challenge.  They can access this challenge via www.myon.co.uk

Chilton Fundraisers

 Today, Chilton Fundraisers have sent home a tube of Smarties for each of the children. Once they have eaten the contents, we ask that they fill the tube up with 20p coins* and return the tube to school by Friday 25^th February. They could do some helpful jobs around the house to earn the money.
