One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly Blog - w.b. 27.06.22

It’s the end of another fun-filled week in Year 1. This is what we have been learning about…

Read, Write Inc.

In Read Write Inc we continue to practice reading books, green, red and alien words. We are trying to increase our writing stamina before we transition to Year Two in September! Please encourage writing at home when opportunities arise e.g. birthday cards, postcards and during role play.

Maths

This week we have been practising repeated addition and multiplication by looking at groups of objects. For example:

There are 5 groups.

Each group has 4 apples in it.

5 x 4 = 20

There are 20 apples altogether.

Topic

This week is healthy relationships week.

We have spoken about what healthy relationships look like. We know that we need to be kind to others but others need to be kind to us aswell. We know that the same rules apply online. We must not write unkind things online as our words spread far and wide and upset people. We know that we should TAG (Tell A Grownup) if we see anything online that makes us worries, scared or sad. We looked at the online safety links that you can find on the Chilton website.

We also spoke about what we could do when we’re feeling upset or angry in order to help us calm down. We went outside and practiced blowing bubbles, taking deep breaths, running around and other strageties that can help us.

We make kindess hearts for our friends this week. We drew a name out of a hat and thought about kind words that we could say about that child. We then wrote these on a love heart to give to each other.

This week we had a fire safety talk. We learnt about the various situations in which you may need to call the fire brigade and the ways in which they can help people. The children have been asked to check that their fire alarms at home are working!

In RWI… we will be concentrating on our capital letters and full stops in our writing.

In maths… we will be learning to divide.

In topic... we will be focussing on science. We will be learning about the basic structure of flowering plants and we will be pressing dried flowers!
