One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly news! 15.9.23

We have had a very busy week in Year 3 this week, lets see what we have been up to.

English

In English this week, we have started another new book called the Stone Age Boy.  This text links really well with our current thematic theme of the Stone Age and the children have enjoyed the book so far. We have been writing non-chronological reports about the Stone Age and the children have been excellent at retrieving information from different sources. We have also been learning about the four sentence types:

Statements - a sentence that is true. A fact. Year 3 are amazing.

Exclamations - these start with 'what' or 'how' and end in a verb. How amazing it is that mammoths had big tusks!

Questions - Start with a question word and end with a question mark.  What are you doing at the weekend?

Commands - Starts with a verb. We call it a bossy sentence. Go to the toilet

We will be continuing our non-chronological report writing next week, with the aim of publishing a complete non-chronological report, using all our key skills.

Maths

Our Maths learning this week has been focused on addition. The children have learnt different ways of adding, including adding using partition, adding using Base 10 (or dienes) and adding using a number line. The children have excelled themselves with their effort and have really impressed us with their independent and shared work.

Next week will be moving on to subtraction so make sure you are practising those number bonds!

Thematic

Our Thematic learning this week has been joint History and Science learning. On Tuesday, the classes visited the school museum of prehistory, where they explored different artefacts, materials and books related to the Stone Age. The children really enjoyed their museum visit and are looking forward to re-visiting the artefacts later in the term. We then moved on to learn about hunter-gatherers, who they were and why they have been given this name – we are sure the children have a wealth of knowledge they can share with you. Finally, we looked at different types of rocks and how they are formed. The children really enjoyed simulating the different rock formations using chocolate, and definitely enjoyed tasting some at the end!

This week has also seen the continuation of our sculpture unit in Art. We learnt about shape, space and form this week through the creation of an elements of art poster. The children were extremely creative and outshone all the adults with their amazing art skills.

Love to Learn

READING: Children in Year 3 are expected to read at home at least four times a week. It is really important that the children bring in their reading records daily so that we can check in with progress and read with the children in school. MyOn is a great way for children to read independently. Once a book has been read on MyOn it will ask you to quiz and direct you to the AR website. Please read as often as possible at home. Thank you for your support.

THEMATIC: Make a poster about The Stone Age – you can do this with any materials you like. Deadline Friday 22nd September

Reminders:

The expectations of uniform is that hair is tied back if it is below the shoulders. Hoodies (apart from those provided by the school) are not permitted and children should be wearing school shoes, not trainers apart from on Sports Project days. PE kit should be navy or black with a white t-shirt.

Friday morning is Sports Project so trainers are needed

Monday afternoon is PE
