Year 5 children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes every day and hand in their reading record daily. Please sign their record and encourage them to read a range of genres. There are banded books in school in addition to the books in the school’s library and the class book corner (including those in the ‘Classics Challenge’).

Learning this week:

This week was our final week of ‘Ice Trap’. We have thoroughly enjoyed exploring Shackleton’s extraordinary expedition and are amazed that every single member of the crew survived such an event. To finalise our learning, we looked at some newspaper articles that were published from the time and then wrote our own report focusing on the rescue..

In maths this week, we have consolidated our understanding of the short and long methods in multiplication. We have also been using the bar model to solve problem involving the four operations.

Our topic lesson this week was not the most pleasant but helped us learn all about the digestive system.....let’s just say we might not be eating weetabix and orange juice any time soon!

Home Learning:

The month of October offers some very obvious reading inspiration! Autumn is in full swing and Halloween summons readers of all types to pick up books that lean toward the spooky side! For this half term’s reading challenge, we would love you to pick a challenge from the list. We ask parents to keep a record in the books of which challenge the children have completed. All pupils who manage the challenge will have their name entered into a draw. We will pull out the winner the first Friday after half term during assembly. The winner will receive a book of their choice from the scholastic website!

The challenges are:

  • Read a book that features a character who wears a fun costume or disguise.

  • Read a book about a character who is the same age as you.

  • Read a book that is set in autumn.

  • Read a book that has a Halloween theme.

  • Read a book with no pictures and use your imagination to draw a picture of the main character.

We look forward to hearing all about your spooky reading choices!'

We would also like the children to continue taking part with their Times Table Rock Star challenges.

There is no right or wrong way to complete a Love to Learn task! Please be as imaginative or as creative as you would like! Love to Learn tasks should be returned on the Wednesday following them being set. Whilst books may not be formally marked, in class we will spend time looking at and enjoying what everyone has learned at home and rewards and house points will be given!
