Newsletter - Week 2!

Please enter an introduction for your blog post here.

Year 5

Welcome to Year 5’s weekly newsletter. Please check here to see what your child’s weekly learning has been and of any notices.

Reminders:

Year 5 swimming takes place every Wednesday afternoon so please ensure your child has a full swim kit in school. The children will be walking to and from the pool, so please check that your child has appropriate footwear and a waterproof coat (if necessary).

Year 5 children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes every day and hand in their reading record daily. Please sign their record and encourage them to read a range of genres. There are banded books in school in addition to the books in the school’s library and the class book corner (including those in the ‘Classics Challenge’.

Learning this week:

This week, the children were introduced the year 5’s first class text, ‘Ice Trap’. The children made justified predictions and clarified new vocabulary. The book is set in Antarctica so we read an information text to give us some background information on the continent. In addition to the factual text, we watched a video clip and used images of Antarctica to generate descriptive vocabulary and write a detailed setting description.

In maths, we have continued our place value learning. We have identified the place value of decimal numbers and applied our learning of place value in different contexts. Our learning then progressed onto addition where we explored the importance of place value and developed our understanding of the column method for adding numbers that have up to five digits.

We completed or RE unit ‘Where did the Christian Bible come from?’. We have explored the origins of The Bible and have become familiar with its structure to support of understanding of the Christian religion.

Home Learning:

Mymaths – please complete the challenge that has been set.

SPaG challenge – create a mnemonic of a word that you find tricky to spell.

There is no right or wrong way to complete a Love to Learn task! Please be as imaginative or as creative as you would like! Love to Learn tasks should be returned on the Wednesday following them being set. Whilst books may not be formally marked, in class we will spend time looking at and enjoying what everyone has learned at home and rewards and house points will be given!
