One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 2nd December

What a wonderful week in Reception!

Naughty Bus Trip!

The children (and adults!) thoroughly enjoyed the Naughty Bus Trip. We rode on the school minibus to Ramsgate Harbour. While there, we looked at the different boats in the harbour, looked at the different forms of transport we c0uld see and drew a picture. The children’s behaviour was amazing on the trip and they were a credit to the school.

Phonics

We have continued our RWI sessions in small groups. All groups will continue to consolidate set 1 sounds. Before children are able to read, it is vital that they can orally blend. This is where you sound out a word e.g. c-a-t and the children put the sounds together to say the word ‘cat’. Any practise of this skill at home will really help to reinforce what the children are learning at school. You could try putting it in to instructions e.g.

  • Put on your c-oa-t

  • Brush your t-ee-th

At this stage, we would want the children to be orally blending 3 sound words.

This week, the children have been using their phonic knowledge to write a wanted poster for the Naughty Bus. They were encouraged to use their sounds to write phrases/sentences e.g. The big red bus.

Sounds Books

As we will now be completing RWI in small groups, we ask that you continue to review the sounds already in the pink sounds books by asking your child to read the sound and practise writing the sound.

Maths

This week we have been learning to compare the mass of objects. We have used balance scales to compare the mass and have been describing what we have found in sentences e.g. ‘The stone is heavier than the pen. The pen is lighter than the stone’. At the end of the week we were feeling the objects, predicting which was heavier/lighter and then using the balance scales to check.

Topic

Our week started with our Naughty Bus trip. After our trip, we drew a simple map to show what we saw on our trip. We have also been learning about what different transport looked like in the past and how it has changed over the years e.g. we looked at the Penny Farthing bicycle and compared to a bike which we use nowadays. The children also completed a wanted poster for the Naughty Bus.

PE

A reminder that children should come in to school on a Friday in their PE kits.

Children should come in to school on a Wednesday in their school uniform, but with trainers.

Junk modelling

If you have any junk modelling (boxes, egg cartons, yoghurt pots etc) at home, please send them in to school so we can use them. Thank you!

Art Competition

For this Terms art competition, we are asking children to design ANYTHING in the style of Yayoi Kusama.  Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist who is sometimes called 'the princess of polka dots'. Although she makes lots of different types of art – paintings, sculptures, performances and installations – they have one thing in common, DOTS!

It is up to you what you design, how you design it or how you would like to present it!

Entries are due in by 9th January – Please pass these on to your class teachers. Enjoy!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us,

Many thanks,
