One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! w/b 17.10.22

We have had a fabulous first term in Year 1 and are looking forward to what term 2 will bring. Here is what we have been up to on our last week of term 1…

Read, Write Inc

This week we continued our Read, Write Inc. lessons. We have been working hard in our groups. We have been practising our set 2 and 3 sounds, and really challenging ourselves with our independent writing.

In each reading folder, there is a sound card and list of red words. Any practise with these at home would be extremely helpful and support your child’s reading and writing at home.

Maths

This week in maths we worked on two investigations, based on working systematically! We had to work together in pairs and try to figure out the challenges Mrs Winchcombe and Miss Bryson gave us. Our first investigation was to see how many addition and subtraction calculations we could make and answer by rolling a dice. We were so good at doing this and made sure we didn’t repeat the same calculations!

For our second investigation, we had three different shaped buttons. We had to make as many combinations we could find. We had a fantastic competition to see who could find the most!

RE

This week we focussed on RE. We started the week by looking at what makes our world wonderful and discussed what is important in our lives. We then moved on to look at the Islamic, Jewish and Christian creation story, which we loved learning about. We explored different accounts of the creation of the sky and Heaven and drew illustrations to match the descriptions. We ended the week by identifying things that make our world special, and wrote down our reasons for this.

Next term, week 1:

Next term we will be continuing to work hard on our sounds, reading and writing in our Read, Write Inc lessons.

In Maths, we will be focussing on Number and place value. We will be learning to understand ordinal numbers, comparing numbers up to 20 (and beyond) and learning to describe and extend number sequences.

We will be starting our new Topic; ‘Thunderbolts and Lightning!’ We will be kicking off our topic by going on an autumn walk/hunt around the school playground and field collecting autumn items and answering our BIG question, ‘Would you want it to be summer all year round?’ We will be also focussing on Art; we will be using our autumn items collected on our walk to create Andy Goldsworthy inspired pictures! Watch this space… We will be ending the week by working on some season art work, using a variety of mediums and commenting on pieces of art.

Love to Learn:

Over half term we would love for you to keep a diary/scrap book which you can present in any way you wish. Please try and practise some of your wonderful writing skills. We can’t wait to see what you have been up to!
