One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 13.10.23

What a fabulous week we have had in Year 1! We have had a fantastic week of learning and fun! Take a look to see what we have been up to!

Read, Write Inc.

This week we have been working incredibly hard in our Read, Write, Inc groups. We have been really focussing on our speed sounds this week, and making sure we can say them speedily. We have also been really focussed on knowing our tricky red words! In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and some red words. Any practise with these would be wonderful!

Reading

Read at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Friday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

In Maths, we have continued to work on our subtraction skills! We have learnt lots of different words for subtraction including minus, take away, less than and subtract. We started the week by taking away using counters. We then moved on to using the crossing out method and counting on.

Taking away by crossing out.

Taking away by counting on.

Next week, we will be focussing on statistics!

Our number fact this week has been… 3+1

Our number fact of the week next week will be… 4+1

Thematic Curriculum

We started the week with some art! The artist we focussed on was Gustav Kimt. We took inspiration from his work, to create our own collages and tree of life paintings!

This week we have been focussing on geography! We started the week off by looking at a range of maps. We visited a map museum in the hall, whilst answering in our books different questions about a map of our local area.  We then worked as a class to create a floor plan of our classroom. Then we walked around school with our white boards, making a rough map before drawing it up and adding labels! (Making sure we included human and physical features!) We ended the week by having a quiz about all our learning throughout our thematic topic this term and talking about our key questions: What is special about Ramsgate? Would you rather be alive now or when your grandparents were children? We have loved this topic, and it has shown us how amazing Ramsgate truly is.

Next week we will be focussing on RE

Love to Learn

This week we would love for you to practice/start looking at your table two times! This can be presented in any way you wish.

Non-School Uniform Day: Friday 20th October

One of our parents at Chilton, is completing a Sky Dive in order to raise money for the charity SANDS, who support anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby or child. We would like to support in any way we can, so we ask that all children come to school in non-school uniform on Friday 20th October. In return, if you are able and wish to, we ask that to donate as little or as much as you wish to the just giving page below:
