One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 09.02.24

Wow, what super duper week of learning we have had. Read on to find out what we got up to...

Read, Write Inc.

We have been really enjoying our new Read, Write, Inc groups! We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Friday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

This week we explored volume and capacity with a fun competition!  We used different containers to transport water from one bucket to another. We soon started to realise that different containers contained different amounts of water. It was so fun!

Next term we will be learning about position and direction, multiplication and division and fractions.

Thematic

This week in art we became art critics. We used our newly learnt vocualbulary to comment on some famous paintings, follow the codes to hear our AMAZING opinions!

In PSHE, we learned all about the internet and how to stay safe online. We read some stories and learned: how we should always ask permission to go online; that not all games are free; to always ask and adult before downloading; and how we have to be very careful to keep our personal information private. Take a look at the posters we made on the iPads about how to stay safe online!

In RE, we learnt all about the special books of different religions. We started with the Jewish Torah and wrote about the story of Abraham. Then we discussed the Christian Bible and illustrated the story of Noah's Ark. Finally, we learnt all about the Qur’an; how to take care of it and show respect to the word of God. We acted out the special rituals that Muslims perform because they believe the book to be so sacred. First, we had to do our ablutions before handling the book. Then, we placed the special book onto a special stand called a Rihal. Next, we covered the book with a cloth to protect it. After that, we stored it on the highest shelf, above the other books.

Next term we will be starting our new topic: Explorers discover the world!

Love to Learn

We would love for you to enjoy you holiday this half term! There is no expectation to complete any learning in your Love to Learn books, however, we would encourage you to continue with your daily reading and use your sound charts and red word lists to continue building fluency.
