One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 19.4.24

Welcome back everyone! We hope you had a wonderful Easter break!

Read, Write Inc.

Wow what an amazing first week back we have had! We have got straight back in to our learning and some of us have even moved RWI groups! We have been continuing practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. We have been really working on our big writes, keeping diaries at home, writing comic strips, writing postcards/cards, and making up stories at home can really support this. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child. Please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Friday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Let's practice spotting special friends, fred talk, read the word. Your alien words of the week are....

Maths

This week we have been looking at time! We recapped our previous learning on o’clock and looked at days of the week and months of the year! We then moved on to tell the time to half past! We were super great at this and even answered tricky problems. For example, Mrs Winchcombe put a cake in the oven at 3.30. She needed to take it out an hour later. What time would that be?

Next week we will be looking at shape, models and patterns!

Thematic

This week we started our brand-new thematic topic, The Toy Maker! We kicked off the week by discussing our big question ‘What are toys for?’ We came up with a range of ideas and spoke beautifully about our own toys and how grateful we are for them. We then moved on to some Science! We learnt all about different materials. We named materials such as wood, plastic, glass, paper, and metal and used vocabulary like hard, soft, flexible and transparent to describe these materials. After this, we looked at different toys and described what they are made of and the properties of these materials.

We then described our own toys in a wonderful piece of writing, using the vocabulary we now know. In Power Play we have also been sorting materials and sorting materials based on their properties. We can already tell this is going to be an exciting topic!

Home learning

This week we would love for you to continue your time learning! We would like you to show the times…

Half past 2

Half past 6

Half past 12

Half past 9

Half past 4

You could also play a game, where someone creates a time for you, and you have to tell the time 😊

This can be recorded any way you wish.
