One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 17.11.23

English

In English this week we have continued to learn how to write a 5 part story. This week we have been learning how to create suspense in the build-up section of our fantasy stories. We have learnt to use rhetorical questions, short snappy sentences, dramatic sentence openers and the way the characters react to show how scared they are e.g. sweat dripped down Ivan’s forehead, his hands shook as the wolves growled at him. In our ‘Reading for Pleasure’ session this week, the children had the opportunity to read and explore the non-fiction books we have in school about the Ancient Egyptians. Here they are enjoying the books…

Next week, we will be learning about varying our sentence types to create interest; using simple, compound and complex sentences, and then we will plan and write our own 5 part fantasy stories as our end of unit writing piece.

Maths

This week we have learnt how to simplify fractions by finding the highest common factor. We then moved on to our geometry learning and learnt to name and describe the properties of 3D shapes and how to classify triangles. Next week we will be learning how to classify quadrilaterals and then interpreting and presenting data in bar graphs and time graphs for our statistics unit.

Thematic curriculum

This week has been ‘Healthy Relationships’ week. We started the week with Kindness Day on Monday where we learnt all about how to be kind to ourselves. The children learnt about the importance of self-care and positive self-talk. We said, ‘Talk to yourself as you would talk to someone you love’ and don’t put yourself down. We also learnt about what bullying is, the impact bullying can have on people and what we should do if we are being bullied or we think we see bullying happening. The children learnt that we are a WAATS school and a STOP school (WAATS – We Are A Telling School, STOP – Start Telling Other People) and that it is so important to speak to a trusted adult if they are worried about bullying.

Next week, we are back to the Ancient Egyptians and we will be learning about their religious beliefs and paintings and sculptures from their era.

Love to Learn

You have 1 week left to make or draw your Ancient Egyptian mask. Please could you send in your home learning by Wednesday 23rd November. You could paint it, colour it in with pens, or actually make a 3D version. We have sent home a white mask if you would like to use this to make it but you can also draw in your Love to Learn book if you’d rather. We still have spare masks in school. If you would like one, please ask your teacher.

- Please could the children play TTRS at home at least 3 times a week. A ten minute blast is all it takes to help them learn the times tables. Daily would be even better!

- Children in Year 4 should be reading at home at least 4 times a week please. Please send their reading records in every day to be checked.
