One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 24th March

It has been an excellent week in Year 5 with children showing great effort and engagement in their learning.

English

This week, we began to write our own Greek myths. After reading several famous Greek myths, we used these to help us pick out the features that we needed and plan the structure of our own myths. We used the settings and characters we created from the previous week and weaved them into our writing and used powerful verbs, past tense and sentence openers to create our narratives.

Next week we will be finishing off our myths, using dialogue and action to end our amazing stories.

Maths

We have been looking at measuring angles in maths this week. Drawing on our previous knowledge of angles, the amount of degrees in a full turn (360) and a half turn (180) to identify missing measurements.

Next week we will be working on our multiplication and division skills

RE

In RE, we have been discovering the religion of Buddhism. We learnt that Buddha is the main figure of Buddhism and that Buddhists use his teachings to seek enlightenment. We looked at the various ways Buddhists worship, rules that they live their lives by, what they believe happens after death and even tried some guided meditation.

Next week we will be creating our own Greek CAM toys and celebrating our learning by dressing up for Greek Day on Wednesday 29th March.

Home learning

For your home learning, we would like you to try some guided meditation. There are many meditation sessions that you can find on YouTube. Here is a link to one to get you started. Keep a note of how the meditation made you feel afterwards.

Messages

Easter will soon be here and we will be holding our traditional Easter egg hunts and bonnet parade in school. Children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 are invited to make an Easter bonnet or hat if they would like to and bring it in to school on the final day of term (Friday 31st March). We will hold a parade in the hall for parents to come along to at 10:00 and prizes will be awarded for the most impressive creations.

For children in Years 3 – 6, they are also invited to enter the Key Stage Two bonnet / hat competition. This will be judged in year groups with prizes awarded.

Greek Day will be on Wednesday 29th March. We encourage children to come in dressed as their favourite Greek God or Hero.
