Chilton Primary School

One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 13.09.24!

We have had another fabulous week in Year 1. The children have continued to amaze and impress us with how well they are settling in to life as Year 1 children at Chilton. We are very proud of each and every one of them!

Walk to the park

On Monday, we will be walking to Nethercourt Park to link with our new thematic learning (see below). Children will need to bring a coat in to school and wear full school uniform.

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Maths

This week in maths, children have continued to look at number. We have been learning to identify and represent numbers in different ways (e.g. by making a number using objects/Numicon, by finding the number on a number line etc). The children have also been learning to match a numeral (e.g. 13) to the number written in words (e.g. thirteen). Towards the end of the week, we have been learning to put numbers in ascending and descending order.

Fact of the week

Each week we will have a fact of the week. We will learn the addition fact(s) and the related subtraction fact(s). This week our fact is:

1+1=2

2-1=1

Thematic

This week we have started our new thematic learning: My Home My Town. To start the week, we thought about the things that we love about where we live. The start of this thematic learning looks at the history of Ramsgate. We started by learning what the past means and the history of our own lives, thinking about what we could do as a baby, toddler and now as a child. We then looked at pictures of Ramsgate from the past and how we can tell it is a picture from a long time ago. We also compared these pictures to those of Ramsgate today.

Reading

Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.

Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!

There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Love to Learn

Well done to all of the children who decorated their love to learn books last week – they are looking fabulous!

This week we would like you to discuss with your child why as family you live in Ramsgate. Have you always lived in Ramsgate? Where did your parents live when they were 5 or 6? If they moved to Ramsgate, why did they move there? What keeps you, as a family, staying living in Ramsgate? We will use this home learning in our upcoming thematic lessons.

As an additional task, if you happen to go to Ramsgate over the weekend, please take some photos of landmarks you see (beach, Ramsgate tunnels, park etc) and print these off. Many thanks!

Please remember that children are only allowed to use 1 page in their books each week. Thank you!

Love to Learn books need to be returned by next Wednesday.
