One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 7.3.25

What another amazing week we have had in Year 3. Thank you for the amazing effort that you all put into your World Book Day costumes! Congratulations to all of the children who competed in the class Speaker competition.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been focusing on our multiplication skills. We used Base 10s and place value counters to practise multiplying 2 digit numbers by one digit numbers before moving on to pictorial representations. We then used the column method to multiply, learning how to regroup. Next week, we will be dividing.

English

In our English lessons this week, we have started reading our Term 4 text, 'The Magic Faraway Tree' by Enid Blyton.

We have been mesmerised by the wonderful, magical descriptions and adventures so far in the book. In our writing, we have been focusing on character descriptions. We planned and wrote a character description of Saucepan Man before using verbs and adverbs to describe Silky the fairy. Finally, we wrote a show-piece which involved describing a character from the book without mentioning them by name. Next week, we will be working on setting descriptions.

World Book Day

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we read a picture book, 'The Last Zookeeper' by Aaron Becker. We loved the book and each had different interpretations of exactly what happened in the story. As the book had no words, we wrote our own versions of the story before completing some artwork in the style of the book. We shared our wonderful costumes and favourite books with the class and we made bookmarks in our Reading for Pleasure session.

Thematic

In Thematic this week, we began our Term 4 unit 'Revolutionary Romans'. We learnt about the historic counties of England and where the Romans settled and influenced before learning about some famous English cities with Roman backgrounds. Finally, we looked at some European countries that were part of the Roman Empire and plotted them and their capital cities on a map.

Love to Learn

For your Love to Learn task this week, please could children choose one of the cities we looked at in class (Winchester, Chester, Canterbury, York, London, Bath) and research how the Romans influenced that city and what they did there in greater detail. As always, the findings from this task can be presented in a creative way of your choice.

Book Fayre

The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 10th March and run until Friday 14th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. Children will come home with a World Book Day book voucher.  These can be spent at the Book Fayre. Cash and online payments are also available, and a percentage of the monies raised will go towards funding more books for Chilton children.
