11.10.24 Weekly News!

English
Throughout English this week, we have continued our newspaper reports on Shackleton and his crew returning from their expeditions. We have been publishing to show what we have learnt in our final piece. We also finished with a recount of Shackleton and his men returning and then completed a summary. The skills we used included indirect and direct speech and varying our tenses. Next week, we will be moving on to persuasive writing.
Maths
This week in maths, we have been focussing on division. We started the week by dividing by 10,100 and 1000 using our place value sliders. We began by looking at dividing whole numbers up to 1000 and then introduced dividing by decimals. Next week, we will be moving on to time.
Thematic
For our thematic this week, we have been comparing the differences of living in North America and the UK. We looked at environmental factors such as climate in the two places. We then moved on to comparing the different types of food and the different types of activities. After that, we created a speech about why we would like to live in North America or the UK looking at positives and negatives.

To become a peer mediator, you need to:
Write a letter to Mrs Winchcombe by next Friday (18th) telling her why you feel you would be a good peer mediator. Please can these be passed on to me.
What is a peer mediator:
-
Peer mediators are clearly identified by their hoodies and work in pairs in their school playground to help children who are involved in a squabble but don’t know how to sort it out.
-
The mediators encourage the children to talk about the problem openly and calmly and then come to a solution which is fair for all concerned.
What qualities will a peer mediator need:
A good listener
Empathetic
Non-judgemental
Discreet
Fair
Not bossy
Helpful in getting young people to find their own solutions to disputes.
