# Weekly News! w/b 21.6.21

This week in Year 2 we have been doing...

This week in Guided Reading, we started the book ‘The Magic Finger’ written by Roald Dahl. We have had a fun week of reading the book, thinking about what questions we would ask Roald Dahl, acted out different scenes in the story and looked at some character expressions. Take a look at some of us in action!

English

In English this week we focussed on conjunctions. We looked at how conjunctions can be used to extend sentences. We looked at because, and, but, so, although and despite.

We used these conjunctions in different ways by writing a postcard and a diary entry as they different characters from the Magic Finger. We looked closely at how different conjunctions can be used to change the meaning of sentences for example but and although. We have become so confident at this. Well done Year 2!

Maths

In Maths this week we have looked at position and direction. We have used the vocabulary left, right, forward, backwards, clockwise and anticlockwise turns. At the beginning of the week we focussed our learning on left, right, forward and backwards. We discovered this is trickier than we first thought as we have to check which way the object was facing as this can change the direction as it might not be a typical left or right. Later in the week, we used this learning to help us solve problems which involved clockwise and anti-clockwise.

Topic

This week in Topic we have been looking at plants and trees! We started the week by looking at labelling key parts of a plant and a tree using the vocabulary stem, root, leaf, flower and for trees bark, root, crown, branch, trunk and leaves. We then started to look at the differences between evergreen and deciduous trees. We learnt that deciduous trees lose their leaves at some point in the year however evergreen trees stay green the whole year round.
