One Childhood, One Chance

Team Cyan and Team Turquoise Weekly News w/b 27th September

We have had another excellent week in year 2!

Maths

In Maths this week we have been subtracting 1 digit numbers from 2 and 3 digit numbers. We have also been subtracting multiples of 10 from 2 and 3 digit numbers. We have been so impressed at how excellent everyone has been at using a hundred square to support their learning.

The steps to success are…

  1. Circle the largest number
  2. Count back the smallest number
  3. Underline the number you land on

RWI

All the children have been continuing to work so hard in their Read Write Inc groups and are producing some super writing. Please keep reading with your child at home as much as you can, we are seeing a huge improvement in their reading and sound recognition.

SPaG

In SPaG this week we have been focusing on contractions. We have learnt that two words can be combined with an apostrophe to form one word.

Should not --> shouldn’t

I am --> I’m

They are --> they’re

I will --> I’ll

We also practised spelling our common exception words.

Topic

In Topic this week we have learnt all about Florence Nightingale and Christopher Columbus.

We learnt all about how Florence Nightingale was a famous nurse who is known as ‘Lady of the Lamp’. Florence Nightingale changed hospitals and showed how trained nurses and clean hospitals could help sick people to get better. We imagined we were Florence Nightingale and wrote some amazing letters all about our experience in the Crimean War!

On Friday, we learnt all about the famous explorer Christopher Columbus. We then made our own compasses and followed our own map around the classroom to discover the different foods that Columbus came across on his voyages across the world.

Love to Learn

Accelerated Reader

Your child should have come home today with an Accelerated reader book and a letter with their login details and instructions of how to complete a quiz at home. Please can your child complete the quiz at home after reading their Accelerated Reader book.  You can access our AR site here https://ukhosted34.renlearn.co.uk/1892319/ or through our school website Home Page.  Your child's username is the first three letters of their first name followed by their surname.  The password is chilton (lowercase) for example: Username for Joseph Smith would be JosSmith and the password is chilton in all lowercase.

Phonics Screen

Due to Covid, last year the Year 1 Phonics Screen was postponed. The government have stated the children need to complete the Phonics Screen in the second half of the Autumn Term. We will be completing this at some point from Term 2 (after October half term). We keep the whole process very casual, the children are unaware that they are being 'tested' and there is absolutely NO pressure put onto them. I have attached a number of Phonics Screens from the past for you to have a look at. The process for reading the words goes as follows...

1. Special friends

2. Fred talk

3. Read the word

If you would like to have a go at home please feel free to :)

Reminders

PE and the Sports Project will now both be on a Tuesday. Children can come into school in their PE kit. They will no longer need to wear trainers on a Wednesday.

Please remember to tie back any long hair.

A reminder that children should have water only and not juice.
