Chilton Primary School

One Childhood, One Chance

A World of Learning Inspires Chilton’s Youngsters

The wonderful world about them has inspired children at Chilton Primary to produce a diverse range of creative learning.

When challenged to describe what makes their own world beautiful the Year 2 group came up with some beautiful responses that ranged from artwork depicting their favourite flowers to poems about their families.

As part of the overall topic called It’s A Wonderful World they also studied the history of the local area and focussed on Dreamland amusement park in Margate and investigated how it had changed through the decades to remain a firm favourite with generations of seaside visitors.

In Geography, pupils have learnt about the four countries in the United Kingdom and discussed their similarities and differences. They can locate them on a map and name their capital cities.

In Science the focus fell on different animals from around the globe. A hands-on experience saw caterpillars brought into class so children could witness their life cycle as they emerged from their chrysalises. This also inspired colourful artwork of butterflies.

One of the biggest treats was reserved for the climax of the topic – a Great British Bake-Off style challenge.

The young bakers were tasked with creating a dish that was typically British – a range of tasty treats included Victoria sponges, Welsh cakes and shortbread. The children voted the best part of the task was tasting the results of their hard work.

Head of School Kate Law, who is also Director of Education, said: “This is a far-reaching topic with such a wide range of learning opportunities. The Year 2 children really embraced all aspects of it and have gained valuable knowledge as well as enjoying their learning, which is important.”

Chilton Primary School is a member of the Viking Academy Trust together with Upton Junior School, Broadstairs, and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.
